ASUU SUSPENDS STRIKE

Following the decision of the National
Executive Council (NEC) of the
Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU) to accept the Federal
Government’s position on the
union’s strike, the body on
Wednesdaysuspended its two-month
old strike with effect from Thursday.
ASUU President, Prof.Ukachukwu
Awuzie, told journalists at a press
conference in Abuja that federal
government has accepted to address
its demands.
According to him, government
reaffirmed its commitment to the
revitalization of Nigerian universities
through budgetary and non-
budgetary sources of funds.
"Government will immediately
stimulate the process with the sum of
400billion naira in the next three
years. These interventions will be
based on identified prioritized needs,”
Awuzie said.
He added that government has also
accepted that state universities would
continue to enjoy special and other
statutory interventions.
The ASUU President further
revealed that government agreed that
it will improve significantly the
budgetary allocation to education
from 2013 to 2020.
The union had on December 4 last
year declared a total and indefinite
strike in order to prevail on
government to sincerely and
judiciously implement the 2009
agreement signed by both parties.
Besides the federal government’s
promise to revitalize the universities,
the union put the future of the
students into consideration while
taking the decision to suspend the
strike
