Wayne Rooney broke mywrist, says nine-year-old ManUnited fan

A young Manchester United fan got
more than he bargained for when he
turned up to watch his first ever Red
Devil's match and came away with a
broken wrist - courtesy of Wayne
Rooney.
Nine-year-old Jamie Thomas from
Wem in Shropshire went to Molineux
Stadium on Sunday to watch his
United heroes take on Wolves.
After taking his seat in the Jack Harris
Stand with his Dad Andy, the two
watched the players warming up on
the pitch.
When a wayward Wayne Rooney shot
headed his way, Jamie tried to block
the shot, but the force of it broke his
wrist.
He ended up missing most of the
match, which United won 5-0, as he
received treatment from first-aiders
and was then taken to hospital.
Jamie’s father Andy told the
Shropshire Star: “It was his first Man
United game and we were in the
Wolves end because somebody got
us tickets.
“We were sat on the first row right at
the front. We were with my nephew,
Jamie’s uncle, his sister and her
brother.
“The players were warming up and
Rooney and Hernandez were taking a
few shots. Rooney missed one and it
was coming straight towards Jamie so
he put out his hands to stop it hitting
him and it broke his wrist.
“At first we thought it was just
bruising but Jamie wasn’t enjoying the
game so we went to first aid. We
ended up missing most of the second
half.
“They wanted us to go to
Wolverhampton hospital but we were
catching the train so we went to
Shrewsbury instead.
“They said it was a clean break and
he has to go back in a couple of
weeks.
“He went back to school yesterday
and has had his friends signing his
cast. He can’t write with his hand and
we are having to help him get
changed.”
He added: “It shook him up a bit but
he’s fine about it now and I don’t
think it’s put him off going to other
games.
“I don’t think Rooney realised what
he had done otherwise I am sure he
would have come over.”

to a baby boy today, who I hear
looks exactly like the late rapper.
God takes. God gives. May it be
well with this little boy, always!

Tension in Ojukwu's family over property...

Members of the late Dim
Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu
family may be setting for a
showdown over the sharing
formula of the ex-Biafran warlord’s
property. A prominent member of
the Ojukwu family, who did not
want his name in print, said,
“About two weeks after the burial
of Ezeigbo Gburugburu, family
members are already forming
groups against one another on
how they can benefit from the
property he (Ojukwu) left behind.
“This is very disturbing because it
has led to accusations and
counter-accusations and then the
hatred that was already in the
family is even getting worse by the
day.
“Some of them felt that they were
left out of the burial plans while
the others ran the show with the
aim of being close to the President
and ensure that they benefit from
the seat of power after the burial.”
Debe, the eldest son of the
deceased, had a fortnight ago told
our correspondent that the
problem in the family before the
death of his father had to do with
the large estate his grandfather left
behind.
He had alleged, “There have been
litigation over the estate my
grandfather left behind and other
members of my family felt they
were going to use the litigation to
blackmail me.
“That is why when they (family
members) wanted to see President
Goodluck Jonathan over the burial
plans, they decided to be hostile
towards me and ensured that I
was not part of the team that
visited the President.
“Due to my nature, I decided not
to allow the hostility impede the
burial activities of my father, a man
I still respect so much even in
death.”
Debe, however, promised on
Tuesday to speak “soon”, where
he would “unveil the true details
surrounding the crisis in the
family”.
Meanwhile, the GRA, Enugu
residence of the Igbo leader
looked abandoned as no family
member was around when our
correspondent visited.
Some of the domestic servants,
who were seen at the gate, said
they suspected trouble might be
brewing having observed the
consistent visits by friends and
associates of Ojukwu, Prof. Okwu
Okwu, who have been coming to
settle differences among family
members.

28,000 Fed Govt workers to be sacked.

The Federal Government is planning
to sack no fewer than 28,000 federal
civil servants to trim the existing high
recurrent expenditure in the yearly
federal budget.
A top government official saddled
with the task disclosed this to The
Nation yesterday. The source said that
the yearly budget can no longer
absorb the staff strength in the public
service.
The official said the exercise, which is
expected to be carried out next year,
would affect only civil servants who
are considered to be unproductive
and who do not add value to service
delivery.
According to the source, who heads
a strategic organ of the federal civil
service, "the structure of the Nigerian
budget can no longer accommodate
the current unwieldy number of civil
servants in government employment
across the nation".
He attributed the difficulty in
operating the federal budget to the
over-bloated recurrent component of
the budget, especially personnel.
Justifying the impending mass sack,
the official added that the demands
by university lecturers, doctors and
the entire civil service have stretched
available resources to a breaking
point.
He pointed out that it was for this
reason the Federal Government was
forced to cut its recurrent budget for
2012 by two per cent; from 74 per
cent to 72 per cent, a cut whic, he
said, has resulted in government
saving about N200 billion.
The source, however, stated that the
government would be extra careful in
the handling of the exercise, saying
that it would come in phases to avoid
possible social and economic
dislocation.
The government, the source said,
does not want thousands of workers
on the streets at a go to avoid having
another civil unrest on its hands. ‘’But
those saying we should cut recurrent
expenditure should not forget that we
have to sack workers," he added.
"Mass sack is inevitable but we will
go into it with a lot of sense and tact.
Workers who are not adding value
will certainly have to go, he added.
Already, a committee headed by a
former Head of Service of the
Federation Mr Steve Oronsanye has
been put in place with a mandate to
trim and reform the federal civil
service. The committee is said to have
started the necessary groundwork on
the exercise.
To guard against a repeat of the
dislocations and endless litigations
thrown up by a similar exercise
carried out by the Obasanjo
administration a few years ago, the
source said government will attempt
to review the existing civil service
laws, which do not allow mass
sacking of workers.
According to him, the laws will be
reviewed so that those affected will
not go to court. "Many of those that
were laid off in that exercise simply
went to court and today they are
back to their jobs," the source added.
Another source in the Office of the
Accountant General of the Federation
(AGF) also confirmed the planned
reduction in the number of civil
servants. The source said: "At present,
there are 78 ministries, departments
and agencies (MDAs) but we expect
another five MDAs by March and by
April this number will rise to 98."
The first step in the mass purge, the
AGF source said, will be the
harmonisation of all the existing MDAs
under the Integrated Payroll and
PersonnelInformation System (IPPIS).
The source, however,identified the
major problem with the IPPIS as that
of connectivity but added that the
office of the AGF has started working
with Galaxy Backbone, another
government agency, to address the
problem.
The source assured that all the MDAs
will be captured on IPPIS by the end
of this year with a significant
reduction in government’s payroll.
The AGF source also explained that
the Pension Task Force put in place
by the Federal Government recovered
about N74 billion, stressing that
further recoveries are being
expected.

WHY GOD ALLOWS PAIN...

This is one of the best explanations
of why God allows pain and suffering
that I have seen..
A man went to a barbershop to have
his hair cut and his beard trimmed.
As the barber began to work, they
began to have a good conversation
They talked about so many things
and various subjects When they
eventually touched on the subject of
God, the barber said:
"I don't believe that God exists."
"Why do you say that?" asked the
customer. "Well, you just have to go
out in the street to realize that God
doesn't exist.
Tell me, if God exists, would there be
so many sick people?
Would there be abandoned children?
If God existed, there would be
neither suffering nor pain.
I can't imagine a loving God who
would allow all of these things."
The customer thought for a moment,
but didn't respond because he didn't
want to start an argument. The barber
finished his job and the customer left
the shop.
Just after he left the barbershop, he
saw a man in the street with long,
stringy, dirty hair and an untrimmed
beard.
He looked dirty and unkempt. The
customer turned back and entered
the barber shop again and he said to
the barber:
"You know what? Barbers do not
exist."
"How can you say that?" asked the
surprised barber.
"I am here, and I am a barber. And I
just worked on you!"
"No!" the customer exclaimed.
"Barbers don't exist because
if they did, there would be no people
with dirty long hair and untrimmed
beards, like that man outside."
"Ah, but barbers DO exist! That's what
happens when people do not come
to me."
"Exactly!" affirmed the customer.
"That's the point! God, too, DOES
exist!
That's what happens when people do
not go to Him and don't look to Him
for help.
That's why there's so much pain and
suffering in the world."

ASUU SUSPENDS STRIKE

Following the decision of the National
Executive Council (NEC) of the
Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU) to accept the Federal
Government’s position on the
union’s strike, the body on
Wednesdaysuspended its two-month
old strike with effect from Thursday.
ASUU President, Prof.Ukachukwu
Awuzie, told journalists at a press
conference in Abuja that federal
government has accepted to address
its demands.
According to him, government
reaffirmed its commitment to the
revitalization of Nigerian universities
through budgetary and non-
budgetary sources of funds.
"Government will immediately
stimulate the process with the sum of
400billion naira in the next three
years. These interventions will be
based on identified prioritized needs,”
Awuzie said.
He added that government has also
accepted that state universities would
continue to enjoy special and other
statutory interventions.
The ASUU President further
revealed that government agreed that
it will improve significantly the
budgetary allocation to education
from 2013 to 2020.
The union had on December 4 last
year declared a total and indefinite
strike in order to prevail on
government to sincerely and
judiciously implement the 2009
agreement signed by both parties.
Besides the federal government’s
promise to revitalize the universities,
the union put the future of the
students into consideration while
taking the decision to suspend the
strike

UNILAG INTRODUCES DEGREE PROGRAMME IN TERRORISM

‘The university will blaze the trial by introducing a bachelor’s degree programme in Terrorism Studies which will meet counter-terrorism challenges and risk of evolving anti-terrorism techniques and counter - terror of threats’

The University of Lagos (UNILAG), has joined the global campaign of finding solution to the problem of terrorism. It is to introduce a degree programme in Terrorism Studies to complement efforts to curb terrorism.

UNILAG Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adetokunbo Sofoluwe said the “university will blaze the trial by introducing a bachelor’s degree programme in Terrorism Studies, which will meet counter-terrorism challenges and risk of evolving anti-terrorism techniques and counter - terror of threats.”

The programme, Sofoluwe, who spoke at a pre-convocation news conference, said, will incorporate: Key issues in international terrorism; Terrorist ideologies aims, belief and motivation; Terrorist modus operandi; International policing policy; Cyber Terrorism; Critical in fracture protection; Aviation Terrorism and security; Martime Terrorism and Security, among others.

Though silent on when the programme will take off, Sofoluwe said by introducing the programme, UNILAG would be setting the pace for other institutions.

He spoke of six other programmes that will make their debut next year. They are Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology, Geology, Fisheries, Geo-Physics, and Early Childhood.

Sofoluwe said the institution has enjoyed increased partnerships with individuals and corporate organisations that have supported in terms of provision of scholarships, endowments, and donations of facilities.

He said: "The university secured scholarships, aids and facilities for students. On March 25, 2011, the university presented endowment scholars awards to 495 students. LG Electronics awarded scholarships worth $15,000 ($1,500 each) to 10 undergraduates in 400 and 500 Level with Cumulative Grade Point Averages of between 4.0 and 4.9.

“The recipients also enjoyed placement for industrial training. We persuaded the MD to consider giving the best student an opportunity to visit the company's headquarters in South Korea. We also urged them to extend the largesse to members of staff.

"Chellarams Industry Plc has entered into a partnership agreement with the University of Lagos to establish Entrepreneurship Skills Acquisition Centre. The partnership will also include the institution of a professorial chair in the management sciences and annual scholarship awards to cover tuition, accommodation, books and some amount of money for two undergraduate students. The Lagos State chapter of the UNILAG Alumni Association facilitated the partnership.

"We are trying to establish digital libraries. The former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of the university, Chief Anthony Mbanefo, as well as a former student, Oluwaseyi Esho, have donated funds to assist us in this regard."
